Outrigger and Dragon Boat
I started dragon boating with Sync or Swim in March of 2008. We won three medals that year out of four races (3rd in second highest division at rose festival, 1st in second highest division in Salem, 1st in third highest division in Portland Sept races) and had a great time. I took a chance and tried outrigger canoeing with some of my teammates, and I quickly got hooked. We practiced all fall and started really training for races in January. There is nothing like 40 degree weather and sideways rain to really make you push hard to get home.We did 4 dragon boat races again in 2009 with general improvement (4th in second highest division in rose festival, consolation winner in the ALCAN top rec division, semifinals of the Kent top division, and 2nd in the second division of the Portland September races), and we did a couple outrigger races as well (Not Last in the Rusty Iron, and 3rd in the race around the island in the men's division).
Below is a map of Portland waterways to give you an idea of where and how far we tend to go on all of our various races and practices. It's been hacked together from three different NOAA charts to expand our reach a bit. You can take a look at the larger version of the map here.
Clicking on a course or the legend entry for that course will take you to a few photos from each.
