Race Around the Island, Aug 15, 2009

This was our second outrigger race of the season, and the longer at 13.5 miles. Our team consisted of Kim, Robert, Jamie, Change, George, and I. 4 of us had never paddled this far before, so to do it on race day was a bit overwhelming. We did very well finishing 3rd in a field of about 8 boats. We had been catching up with second place for most of the second half of the race and probably would have had them by the end had we not tried a little too hard coming around the last bouy a half mile before the finish. We cut it a bit too close and ended up popping our ama (the outrigger) up on the bouy and huliing (flipping the boat over). It took us 6 minutes to right the boat and get under way again. We were far enough ahead of the rest of the field that no one overtook us and we finished with a time of 2:05 in third place. This was apparently a first for this race and in honor of that we got a 6-pack of homemade labelled huli beer. Very appropriate.
