Outrigger and Dragon Boat Practice
Our standard outrigger practice takes us south and around the east side of Ross Island, then down to the Sellwood bridge and to the golf course if we are really pushing it. We come back up the main river channel straight back to the marina. This long practice loop is about 8 miles or so, our short practice loop (pretty much around the island and back) is about 6 miles. For dragon boat practice we go straight south on the main channel for about a mile and a half, then turn it around and come back. we do longer practices once in a while where we migth push it to 4 miles total, but not very often. Dragon boating is a sprint sport, not endurance like outrigger.
Below are some pictures of the huli drills we do every year in the Sellwood area of our practice loop, and pictures of the OC1 Robert and I now own that will also be taking the same route. The route around the island is especially nice in the fall as it starts getting quieter on the river, and we paddle more in the dark. It's kind of a meditative atmosphere with just you, your team, your canoe, and the river working together.
Clicking on a course or the legend entry for that course will take you to a few photos from each. You can take a look at the larger version of the map here.
